Prevent endless race attempts

Endless attempts at races shouldn't really be allowed imho. Once the start line is crossed, the race should be committed to. It will stop sailors 'learning' the course by returning to the main menu before the finish line is crossed. It will make it a test of wits as well as skill. Otherwise what is the point of only allowing a fixed number of attempts?

I think the new change is great! It would be nice to know visually with each race if this is the only one try or if there are multiples. Other than that clarity, it's a great improvement

Aaron Sawyer: You can now see in the main menu, per League - how the race works ( how many attempts and if DNF is tracked )

Aaron Sawyer: I think three races per class would be best, especially with the extreme windshifts that happen a few seconds before the start. In pro this can mean you've lost the race before you started without another chance. Where's the fun in that?
Aaron Sawyer
HP van Leeuwen: Are you a sailor in real life as well? There are risks and rewards for going to the edges of the course. It's the same wind for everyone and without prior knowledge the same boats going out to one side will get burned later perhaps. Certainly day to day. It feels very "real" to me this way. The other way is too gamified with "perfect" being possible instead of a constant measuring of risk and reward
That's my take anyway!
HP van Leeuwen
Aaron Sawyer: Yes i am. But this is a game.
Greg Dziemidowicz
Are you happy for this to be moved to done? ( is this working as intended? )
Darren Brown
Greg Dziemidowicz: Yep. Love the implementation in Pro. Looking forward to seeing it in Dinghy and Wazsp in due course.

Greg Dziemidowicz: It's great. It has, for me anyway, enhanced the enjoyment of the race practices immensely, it is no longer about the time you have to invest and now is all about skill, and luck. Much more realistic. Thank you.

I like the DNF rule. It saves time and is more "real". However, 90 seconds is very little time to plan the start tactically. You need a few seconds to assess the general situation, the wind direction in relation to the course and to watch out for lulls. Then take up your position and start cleanly. That's a lot in 90 seconds. IRL you have 10 minutes for that. I think 5 minutes is enough here and if you don't want to wait, you can fast-forward.
Dave Syer
Fast forward is an awful experience though, as implemented, because you don't stop the physics, so you keep moving. I personally wouldn't want 5min - too long. 2min seems long sometimes in the multiplayer, but I could probably get used to it.
Greg Dziemidowicz
Ok - the latest version has an implementation of this for Pro, Dinghy and Zone leagues.

Started working on this. If the race starts, your attempt will be counted towards your limit, if league is configured to track it. For now planning on tracking in Pro and Zone races. ( So old system will work in Standard and country leagues for now )

This happens to me when I inadvertently hit the 'A' button with my right hand (Oculus 2) during the race and unintentionally exit. I wish this button didn't do this or there was a confirm or something ...
HP van Leeuwen
I didn't know a DNF doesn't count as a race. It explains some questions i had. I hope this matter is solved in the future one way or the other because it doesn't feel quite fair. By bailing out you can memorize the race by heart because it's exactly the same race every time.
HP van Leeuwen
On the other hand irl it's common practice for sailors to explore the racing course (sometimes months) before the actual race so... i'm not sure.

I have been shamelessly multistarting, but only because there is no way i can tell if others are doing it also.
False starts should mirror racing rules IMO. Scoring should include only boats crossing the finish line. Dropping out on the last leg?
maybe not allow that.
