In multiplayer, when the start timer is going, I frequently sail away from the start line close hauled. Sometimes I receive a false start message even though there are 60 seconds to the start. I think false start errors shouldn't occur until the race starts or it should be made clear that you cant sail down towards the first mark (even if outside of the starting line).
